PEN-toe-san poly-SUL-fate
A semi-synthetic compound being explored for longevity — may support joint health and reduce cellular senescence.
Also known as: Elmiron, PPS
FDA approved for: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (Elmiron)
Last reviewed: April 2026
Originally approved for bladder pain, pentosan polysulfate has gained interest in longevity medicine for its potential to reduce cellular senescence (zombie cells) and support joint health. It mimics natural glycosaminoglycans that protect tissue surfaces.
